Socket

Written & directed by Barry Purves Produced by the Cosgrove Hall Films Archive & Waterside Arts Filmed at Mackinnon & Saunders Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund

With an introduction by Brian Cosgrove OBE, this project demonstrates easy-to-learn stop motion skills from some of the animation industry’s leading artists.

Animated by BAFTA award winning director and animator Barry Purves (The Wind in the Willows, The Pied Piper of Hamlin) with character designs by Bridget Appleby (The Reluctant Dragon), this short film aims to provide an accessible insight to the development of character, setting and in-camera stop motion techniques.

The making of this film is part of a wider initiative to provide a platform for local artists, where new collaborations can be made between makers, writers, and animators. Using Cosgrove Hall Films Archive (also based at Waterside Arts) as a living resource, we hope to maintain traditional stop motion techniques while supporting new and exciting projects.

This project has been produced by Cosgrove Hall Films Archive with support from Heritage Lottery Fund, Waterside and CIT.

With the release of ‘Socket: A Robot Odyssey’ we invite emerging animators to create their own stop motion shorts and share them with us by sending them to animation.waterside@gmail.com. We hope to screen a selection of short films at one of our upcoming AniMates meet-ups at Waterside Arts.
