THEATRE

BREAKING GROUND

From comedy to cabaret and music to magic, our Breaking Ground scratch night has an eclectic mix of art forms all in their early development stages.

This is an open variety night, so all performance disciplines are usually welcome: theatre makers, comedians, dancers, musicians, cabaret performers and beyond.

Artists have the opportunity to meet with our in-house production team about the future of their work, receive advice, as well as support (rehearsal space, programming or mentorship etc.) towards the realisation of their project.

THEATRE COMMISSIONS

Beginning in 2013, CIT and Waterside received support from Arts Council England to develop a series of theatre commissions for independent theatre-makers to create new work for the venue's Chambers space.

Several theatre-makers have now taken part in the scheme, receiving mentoring along with rehearsal space, technical and marketing support in the development of their work.

The project is aimed towards early-stage theatre makers and has seen a number of its participants go on to tour work across the UK. Productions created through the scheme include:

  • The Man Who Woke Up Dead - Square Peg Theatre

  • White Lies - Nick Birchill

  • Beautiful Warmth - Checked Shirt Theatre

  • What's The Matter With You? - Mighty Heart Theatre

  • The House at the Edge of the Universe - Four Shadows Theatre

  • Swear School - Thick Richard

  • First Time - Nathaniel Hall

  • Bi-Topia - Sam Danson
